The Big Build - Thailand

December 7-23, 2012

32 HOUSES     32 TEAMS     16 DAYS

Join us in Thailand for a trip where you will actively participate in providing a home for a destitute family as well as experience the adventure of such an incredible country.

The BIG BUILD is a partnership initiative between International Childrens Care Australia and the Australian Union Conference Department of Youth Ministries.

WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?

In December 2012, 32 teams of around 6-8 people each are heading to Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai) to build 32 houses in two weeks. Your team will build a house in partnership with a family in need who wil live there once the house is completed. The great thing is, you don't need to be a builder!

This is going to be the adventure of a lifetime! You'll experience the local culture, eat traditional food and meet some incredible people. You'll also have the chance to visit other ICC projects around Chiang Mai in Thailand.

So why build 30 houses in Thailand? Well, the houses are the solution to a greater problem. Many of the hill tribes who live along the Thai-Burma border are essentially stuck in no-man's land. Originally from Burma (Myanmar), many of these people were displaced due to political issues and now are unable to become Thai citizens because they do not have any identification papers. However, if a person has a home or has ownership of land, they can apply to become a Thai citizen, which gives them access to employment opportunities and government services such as healthcare and education. So...the BIG BUILD isn't only about building houses - it's really about building a community for these people in need. We want them to feel support through having a physical home but also feel support from friends around them.

On the BIG BUILD, your team will be involved in providing physical labour to help construct one of these homes. The foundations will be laid before you arrive and there will be local and Australian builders onsite to provide your team with assistance and support.
